United Runners.org was born out of the generous spirit of two young runners in Colombia that helped my husband through
the last leg of the December 2006 Fenalco 10K in Barranquilla, Colombia.
My husband, not being completely acclaimed to running the high humidity and 98 degree heat of the Barranquilla asphalt
streets, began to falter in his run. Javier Sarmiento, 15, and Humberto Cardenas, 14, saw this and sprayed my husband
with water and ran with him to help him through the last leg of the race. Javier and Humberto
are members of the youth running club, Club ABC, which serves the poor community of Las Americas in Barranquilla, Colombia
. This club has no funding and no support other than the dedication of their coach, Carlos Cantillo, to the children
of his community and their love of running. As a consequence, the children run without shoes and proper running equipment.
